Providing Resources
One of the core aims of the Oconee County Sheriff’s Foundation is to “secure resources to strengthen public safety.” This mission is achieved through programs such as the K9 Program, as well as a range of other initiatives. The following advancements represent crucial resources that were not covered by the county budget, relying instead on the generous donations made through the Foundation to bring them to life.
Drones
Drones are an invaluable tool for law enforcement, enhancing officer safety and efficiency. Made possible through donations from the Oconee County Sheriff’s Foundation, these drones provide an aerial view that helps officers locate suspects or victims quickly and safely, covering more ground than traditional searches.
Drones also allow officers to assess unsafe structures without putting themselves at risk and can be used to communicate with individuals in inaccessible areas. They can even carry small items like medical supplies to those in need until help arrives.
The drone program is a testament to community support, with every drone purchased or donated through the Foundation, ensuring officers have the tools needed to keep Oconee County safe.
School Safety
To enhance the safety of students and staff across Oconee County, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Foundation has provided funding for biometric long gun safes to be installed in each of the 18 schools in the School District of Oconee County. This initiative allows School Resource Officers (SROs) quicker access to patrol rifles in the event of an active shooter, significantly reducing response time and improving their ability to protect students and staff.
The safes are securely installed in undisclosed locations, accessible only by the assigned SRO’s thumbprint, ensuring both security and rapid availability when needed. By equipping SROs with faster access to their rifles, the Sheriff’s Office aims to enhance accuracy, reduce response time, and save lives in critical situations.
The Foundation’s funding, supported by donations and fundraisers, made this initiative possible without the use of taxpayer money. This proactive step is part of a collaborative effort between the Sheriff’s Office, the School District, and community partners to provide an additional layer of security for Oconee County schools.
